The scriptures have much to say about your identity in Christ. Frankly, it would be impossible to cover ALL of it in this one post! But here are a few to get you started exploring what the Bible says about who you are as a follower of Jesus.
New and Blameless
You are a new creation.
2 Cor. 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
You are Blameless
Eph. 1:14 – For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
Col 1:22 – But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation
Jude 24 – To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy
A Child, an Heir, and a Friend
You are a beloved child
Eph. 5:1 – Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children
Rom 8:16 – The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Rom 8:16&17; – The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Gal. 3:29 – If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
A friend of Christ
John 15:15 – I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
With a Purpose and In His Image
With a purpose
Eph. 2:10 – For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Made in His image
Gen. 1:26 – Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Alive in Christ and Chosen
Alive in Christ
Gal. 2:20 – I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Eph. 2:4-6 – But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
Chosen race (and more!)
I Pet. 2:9 – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Look at I Peter 2:9 once more – “God’s special possession”. If that doesn’t give you a strong sense of just how much he loves you . . . then read it again and again until it sinks into your mind and heart!
God is a loving father who cherishes his children. Learning to live in our true identity – the identity that we have because of our relationship with him – can be a challenging task. But once we acknowledge the truth of who we are in him, the way we look at life changes completely.
Zephaniah 3:17 –
The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.
